Women who have a family history of breast cancer or other cancers may have inherited an abnormal gene that puts them at higher risk getting the disease.
Some women may choose to have a genetic test using blood or saliva to see if there are any gene mutations that increase their risk of breast cancer. The most common gene mutations are BRCA1, BRCA2 and PALB2.
Deciding to undergo this type of screening is an important decision and should be discussed in detail with your physician. Most patients undergo genetic counseling as well to learn more about the impact this type of screening can have on family planning decisions and other family members.
